I warmly invite you to experience Echizen Washi and Contemporary Mokuhanga, an international exhibition showcasing the dialogue between the centuries-old tradition of Echizen washi and contemporary woodblock printmaking.

“Echizen Washi and Contemporary Mokuhanga” at Takefu Public Hall Memorial Museum in Echizen, Fukui prefecture.

Echizen City has joined the “UNESCO Creative Cities Network” Craft & Folk Art field. This exhibition will be held in cooperation with the city as an opportunity.

Echizen washi is grown in the Japanese climate and has developed independently for over 1500 years. Echizen washi has been utilised for various purposes, but due to its durability and beauty, it has also been treasured as woodblock printing paper for many years.

Simultaneous: MI-LAB 30th Anniversary Exhibition

International Woodblock Printing Lab (MI-LAB) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. In 2024, we moved our base to Awatabe-cho, Echizen City, and we continue to spread water-based woodblock prints, welcoming artists from all over the world. A look back at MI-LAB’s progress so far with various materials and works from associated artists.

Concurrently held: Japan-India Print Exchange Exhibition

With the “Japan-India Print Exchange Exhibition” held at the Japan Foundation, New Delhi, India, in 2024, we have continuously held exchange exhibitions between printmakers from both countries, Japan and India. As part of the exchange, this exhibition presents newly made prints by Indian artists using Echizen washi.
